After Valparaiso, we will increasingly push in southern Chile. The island of Chiloé is the last major step before having to return to Santiago where a flight ahead for Colombia.
The island of Chiloé is the second largest island after the Great Chilean Tierra del Fuego island. It is part of the archipelago of Chiloé with its many islands and islets. With 155,000 inhabitants, the archipelago is not very populated. Ancud and Castro are the two main cities, one is located on the east coast and the second in the far north, to the south of Puerto Montt.
On this island, the Indian peoples of the island long resisted the Spanish conquest. The independence of Chile proclaimed, Fort San Antonio Ancud was the last Spanish stronghold to surrender. Today, it remains a section of wall still seeming to defy the ocean.

Ancud is not a priori the nicest place on the island. Yet this peaceful fishing port will be enough to hold you. I stayed four days because of a thunder couchsurfing experience! Teresa welcomed us into his large wooden house outside the city, near a beach. We were not the only ones: there were five other surfers! Owls meetings and sacred meal around seafood cheap corner.
The main attraction of the north of the island, is the penguin colony that has developed on all islands northwest of Chiloé. If this is your "first time", you'll love this no doubt!
In any case, the scenery on the road are sublime and the journey alone is worth the trip.
